A Dozen Commitments

original

In her home country
she learned never to commit
to the wild birdsong.

~~ ~~ ~~

Now I know his tricks,
I will not commit to him—
time to slip away.

~~ ~~ ~~

You may applaud her
for making a commitment—
or call her a fool.

~~ ~~ ~~

Lack of commitment?
There are many good reasons—
one of them is God.

~~ ~~ ~~

She was on her way
to the place of commitment
when she was waylaid.

~~ ~~ ~~

Wayfaring stranger,
why did you commit yourself
to life on the road?

~~ ~~ ~~

Painted with the brush
of commitment, their marriage
outlasted the stones.

~~ ~~ ~~

The singing children
committed themselves to notes
known only to wrens.

~~ ~~ ~~

There were wanderings
to which I could not commit,
so I slipped away.

~~ ~~ ~~

Old fisher of souls,
did you not commit yourself
to the baited hook?

~~ ~~ ~~

The dry riverbed
commits itself to no one,
not even raindrops.

~~ ~~ ~~

Until tomorrow
I commit my soul to God—
then I’ll take it back.

  1. Sounds to me like the old fisher of souls is having second thoughts—is he? You’ve written some thought-provoking (and even some disturbing) pieces here. The ones about God are a little unnerving, but maybe that’s OK. Maybe we need to be jolted out of our complacency. Thank you for your work. Although I don’t visit often, it’s always a pleasure to read what you write.

  2. King of Haiku … I bow to thee :-)

  3. Wow! You were inspired today! A lot of good questions here. Always question, or you’ll never learn. Excellent :)

  7. a varied and well-written set….liked them all, espec. the one about marriage -’painted with the brush of commitment’ – and the so-very-dry riverbed…I have been entertained here….
