Half a Whirl with Richard Wright

Wordlel76

The first line of each haiku or senryu is the last line from several haiku in Haiku: This Other World by Richard Wright. I have used six of this week’s Wordle words.

The first ant of spring
seems dazed by all the sunlight
hammering her brain.

~~ ~~ ~~

In fields of young corn
I hear the labored breathing
of men chopping weeds.

~~ ~~ ~~

A peach tree blooming
fills my heart with fear and dread—
hail shreds each petal.

~~ ~~ ~~

On gusts of March wind
all that is holy rises,
then plummets to earth.

~~ ~~ ~~

In the dusty woods
an old man murmurs prayers—
one cricket listens.

~~ ~~ ~~

In the autumn mist
I strike a match to incense—
fragrance sputters out.

  1. Well dang….you can even make ants intriguing. Better the sunlight, then some human’s foot, I suppose. :)

Hahahaha! I wasn’t even sure I could participate this week, owing to utter exhaustion from having an ED kid in my classroom–a chair-thrower and door-kicker!

  2. I’ve missed reading your haiku. I’m glad you dodged the chair long enough to give us these images. Good luck with the semester.

  3. These are glorious. I love all that is holy rising, and the prayer overheard by the cricket especially. Lovely.

  4. As always, I love reading your poems. My favorites today are the peach tree, and the last two: the dusty wood and the autumn mist.

    Richard

  5. I like the one with the old man being listened to by one cricket the best, but all were (as usual) wonderful.

  6. I think I must be that cricket listening. These words, the responses, have taken me on a journey, lifted me up, and put me in a wider place. Thank you for each of your images,

    Elizabeth

  7. A wonderful set … filled my mind with peace !!!

  8. One cricket listens:
    A voice in the wilderness
    Speaks mystic riddles.

    Cheers!
