A Wednesday Trio

original

The perfect poem,
free of blemish or error—
can no one write it?

~~ ~~ ~~

In the parking lot
I hear a little jingle—
pennies tumbling round.

~~ ~~ ~~

The reclining god
will vindicate all sinners—
but his fee is steep.

All flesh is as grass,
so say the biblical words—
is that all there is?

~~ ~~ ~~

novice with an axe
swinging wildly at the wood
sudden gush of blood

~~ ~~ ~~

Though you sear my soul,
words of harshness, words of spite,
grace will ice your heat.

Three Takes on ‘Raindrops’

Take 1

This is a country
raindrops will never dampen—
hearts of dust and stone.

~~~ ~~~ ~~~
Raindrops keep falling
everywhere but on these stones—
the gods are laughing.
~~~ ~~~ ~~~

Small raindrops tremble—
somewhere far away from stones
mighty oceans roar.

Lord of the feathers,
do not dampen my pinions
as I cleave the air.

~~ ~~ ~~

You spit in the dirt
to keep my heart from straying,
yet I drift away.

~~ ~~ ~~

Tremble on this ground,
for it is consecrated
by ten thousand tears.

Nothing quite makes sense
if you are not generous
with your heart and soul.

~~ ~~ ~~

burnished river stone—
just one more rock in his eyes,
but in hers, a gem

~~ ~~ ~~

She chooses silence
to penalize her lover—
why is he so slow?

You may be certain
that a generous woman
will demand payback.

~~ ~~ ~~

With wilting flowers
there is just one thing to do—
go tell the raven.

~~ ~~ ~~

Penalize, my God,
those who probe in sacred wounds
with no healing art.

Who was dreaming what
when a bloody hand appeared,
leading them astray?

~~ ~~ ~~

Kinky poetry
may or may not titillate
those with restless hearts.

~~ ~~ ~~

From the fruitful day
she plucked a tender morsel,
popped it in her mouth.

How could I forget
my dependence on the words
that give life to me?

~~ ~~ ~~

In a secret place
she kept one stick of incense
for emergencies.

~~ ~~ ~~

The bedclothes rumple
beneath my restless body—
old cockroach hotel.

You are a blossom,
fragrant and voluptuous—
wind coming down hard.

~~ ~~ ~~

While I am writing,
do not jostle my left hand—
seven haiku wait.

~~ ~~ ~~

pinned to her coat sleeve
remnant of a yellow star—
Dachau clings like smoke
