Haiku and Senryu by the Dozen

A guttering flame—
in the failing candlelight,
I stumble downstairs.

~~ ~~ ~~

Cold winds from the north—
in this permeable tent,
what will keep them out?

~~ ~~ ~~

Through frozen country,
fields clotted with ice and snow,
we make our way home.

~~ ~~ ~~

Sixteen fallen trees
littering the brumal earth—
still they wear their leaves.

~~ ~~ ~~

Only women know
that making friends with anguish
is a means of grace.

~~ ~~ ~~

Do poets like cake?
Fresh-baked and served with brandy,
they might have a slice.

~~ ~~ ~~

With seductive speech
she startles me at matins—
could she be the Lord?

~~ ~~ ~~

When I am in need,
my Lady Serenity
comes to comfort me.

~~ ~~ ~~

You are a ploughed field,
not yet ready for harvest—
first must come the seed.

~~ ~~ ~~

Who are your angels?
The revelation shocks me,
I fall down and weep.

~~ ~~ ~~

To a distant land
your own feet will carry you—
do not be dismayed.

~~ ~~ ~~

If your tongue would sing,
you must woo Music Maiden,
from whom notes are born.

burning in circles of light—

Come, watch him lumber
through the streets and alleyways,
