Haiku and Senryu: 2nd Baker’s Dozen

 

Of the chrysalis
there is still a shred or two
unclaimed by the wind.

By the shrewd habit
of kneeling in the kitchen
she found sustenance.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
For a slice of bread
you are slavering in vain—
be content with cake.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
Will You reel me in
when I wander far away
from Your endless love?
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
Pick the tomatoes
before the earth goes dormant,
sing out each weed’s name.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
They were good people,
though they had no depth of soul—
the starlings miss them.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
What is it saying,
the apple crisp and golden,
to the rising moon?
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
A small pool of light—
I contemplate with wonder
the wren that gulps it.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
I cobble meaning
out of stones dotted with moss,
buttered with lichen.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
At a roadside shrine
she makes one resolution:
to pay attention.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
Thirty hungry koi
roiling the small pond’s surface—
toss them haiku crumbs.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
A step at a time
down the broad but crooked path
you find what you need.
 
~~ ~~ ~~
 
Spend the next twelve days
staging one grand spectacle—
no one will forget.
