Haiku and Senryu: 2nd Baker’s Dozen

original

Of the chrysalis
there is still a shred or two
unclaimed by the wind.

~~ ~~ ~~

By the shrewd habit
of kneeling in the kitchen
she found sustenance.

~~ ~~ ~~

For a slice of bread
you are slavering in vain—
be content with cake.

~~ ~~ ~~

Will You reel me in
when I wander far away
from Your endless love?

~~ ~~ ~~

Pick the tomatoes
before the earth goes dormant,
sing out each weed’s name.

~~ ~~ ~~

They were good people,
though they had no depth of soul—
the starlings miss them.

~~ ~~ ~~

What is it saying,
the apple crisp and golden,
to the rising moon?

~~ ~~ ~~

A small pool of light—
I contemplate with wonder
the wren that gulps it.

~~ ~~ ~~

I cobble meaning
out of stones dotted with moss,
buttered with lichen.

~~ ~~ ~~

At a roadside shrine
she makes one resolution:
to pay attention.

~~ ~~ ~~

Thirty hungry koi
roiling the small pond’s surface—
toss them haiku crumbs.

~~ ~~ ~~

A step at a time
down the broad but crooked path
you find what you need.

~~ ~~ ~~

Spend the next twelve days
staging one grand spectacle—
no one will forget.

  1. not sure which one I love better of your Bakers dozens, but I will go with this one here..

  2. Reminds me of Marie Antoinette’s famous ignorant, flippant quip about the peasants having no bread: “Then let them eat cake.”
    Lovely, once again.
RYN about Sherlock, I would like to know what happens next, too 😉

  3. At a roadside shrine
    she makes one resolution:
    to pay attention.

    This one hit home.

  4. I really like this style… I want to learn new ways of writing… I just write emotions and blurb them out… this is very good work… perhaps I should try a style like sometime:)

  5. Haiku is a deceptively difficult form to master and yet these are outstanding. Enjoyed every one of them.

  6. magical and mystical indeed!
    bravo!

  7. A delightful meal with great depth and rich relish.

  8. Those are great! My favorite is the resolution to pay attention – I don’t think most of us pay much attention

  9. What an incredible array of haiku!

  10. Wonderful verses, mmt. My favorite for the message conveyed is:
    Will You reel me in
    when I wander far away
    from Your endless love?

I also like the koi and wren haikus.

  11. There was one good man
With a soul both deep and broad
    Weaving word portraits.

    Cheers!

    Thanks for sharing.

  15. Freestyle in all its glory! It certainly agrees with you! Well done, every single one!
