Five Measures photo HHnew.jpg

~~ 1 ~~
Inch by inch
she measures her progress—
lame pilgrim.
~~ 2 ~~
her sole companions—
some rusty buckwheat blossoms
measuring the way
~~ 3 ~~
measuring a life
in coffee spoons or shadows—
a few scant ounces
~~ 4 ~~
Leaving the highway,
she takes the little side road,
still eyeing the map.
~~ 5 ~~
between wing and beak—
perhaps the width of a song,
the length of a breath

  1. I love that third one!

  2. Look for A Lovely Thing

So much deliciousness to chose from. I really like “measuring a life in coffee spoons.” That is especially well penned. Then there’s the “perhaps the width of a song.” I enjoyed this set. Thank you.

  3. Amazing set.. I particularly enjoyed reading the second and the third one but overall, lovely creations.

  4. You weave an amazing tale with your haiku. Nicely written.

  5. Fantastic group of haiku! I love #3 and #5 especially!

  6. I am just green-eyed with this collection!! Absolutely incomparable!!

  7. The width of a song – interesting thought! 🙂

  8. I like the T S Eliot one best. (3rd one)

  9. Most wonderful set
    I can’t begin to measure
    just how excellent

  10. Wow you were inspired, I found this one hard! Well done x

  11. The last one caught me by surprise. Your haiku are always wonderful but that one captured my feelings and my heart. So many different ways to measure…

  12. Last one blew me off…excellent..

Hope you will visit me here, MMT

  13. Totally loved the 3rd one. 🙂

  14. You are on a roll MMT! This feels like a single poem to me, not five takes on measure. Yes? And, because of your opener, it resonated with me! Thank you!

  15. The first reminds me of my flights to Lourdes.

  16. Beautiful haiku set MMT! The third is my fav!

  17. loved every bit of this MMT 🙂 Life is immeasurable and yet we try to measure it in vain…

  18. Wonderful series of haiku MMT especially the second haiku is awesome, just a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing.

  19. wonderful set…the 4th made me chuckle – I always use maps, because the GPS sends me in circles (and I know it’s not my fault!)

  20. The third is wonderful…. Somehow I got Crash test Dummies Coffeespoons into my head

    Afternoons will be measured out
    Measured out, measured with
    Coffeespoons and T.S. Eliot

  21. WoW.
