Convoluted Whirl

~~ 1 ~~
Three redwing blackbirds
swear an oath to the north wind:
We will outlast you.

~~ 2 ~~

To be in fifth grade
is to sip from a dry brook—
your tongue turns to wood.

~~ 3 ~~

Through an April fog
three strange women are stumbling—
one begins to chant.

~~ 4 ~~

a porcelain doll
without a stitch of clothing—
enigmatic smile

~~ 5 ~~

singed with fires of hope
a dozen souls in limbo
crying out to God

~~ 6 ~~

on her wrists and palms
a dozen faces held fast
by tattooer’s ink

~~ 7 ~~

tumbleweed heaven—
ten thousand miles of fences
on the Kansas plains

~~ 8 ~~

three crickets chirping
papers littering hallways
my house is too small

~~ 9 ~~

gaudy little gifts
clutched by desperate tourists
for the folks back home

~~ 10 ~~

Park bench at midday—
the bag lady rests briefly
before shuffling on.

~~ 11 ~~

listening deeply
hearing a cry of distress—
from her eyes falls frost

~~ 12 ~~

moonlit this evening—
Jaffa, the port where Jonah
runs away from God

  1. Love this – Park bench at midday/the bag lady rests briefly/before shuffling on. But I think number four really does it for me after our earlier conversation.

My doll is still intact! 😉

  2. I like the flashes of defiance peppered through this convolution..the doll’s wry smile..the tattoos..almost like kicking away that fifth grade boredom and enjoying the world..and words..

  3. I love the first one!

  4. You know how I always see them all as connected – this time I wasn’t seeing a connection until the last and there it was each experience at the port of Jaffa “where Jonah runs away from God” … I love each and all – individually and collectively – as always 🙂

  5. Great haiki as always. I look forward to reading them!

  6. These are all good, but #1 is extra good ( my grandmother used to say extra good)!

  7. Each week you tantalize us with your haiku. Often I try to read the writer behind the words but there again you tease.

  8. Three redwing blackbirds, three women stumbling, and three crickets chirping. Three is a trinity of being and still Jonah runs away from God. Leaving a lesson for each of us to ponder. Incredibly thought provoking as usual,

Huh! I never noticed that trinity of threes. Thanks for pointing it out! 😉

  9. Your 4th haiku reminds me of my sojourn in Holland when I was in Delft, the home of the Delft Blue China. They were just as you had described, MMT! Beautiful pieces! Your haiku set are just as great!

  10. mmt, love your collection as always. My favourites are 1 and 5, great images.

  11. #1 Blackbirds were always defiant.
