Fishing Tales

~~ 1 ~~
seven fishing boats
rocking imperceptibly
in a gentle swell

~~ 2 ~~

fishing line tangles
twice around the willow limb—
Elijah returns

~~ 3 ~~

fishing through the mess
in the middle desk drawer—
pages torn from Psalms

~~ 4 ~~

fishing from the bridge
with a stolen rod and reel—
Egypt lies downstream

~~ 5 ~~

how her heart aches
fishing for compliments
that never come

~~ 6 ~~

deep-water fishing—
nothing God says in mercy
keeps Jonah on land

~~ 7 ~~

sharp prongs of lightning—
a fleet of fishing trawlers
limping back to shore

~~ 8 ~~

fishing boots with holes—
watching prophets weave and sway
limping round puddles

~~ 9 ~~

guts bloody the sink
from this morning’s fishing trip
to Lake Galilee

  1. Fishing certainly is a broad concept..i like how you have woven present images (her searching in the drawers for psalms) along with biblical references..makes for an ocean of a poem..

  2. Well the Bible came in handy for this offering. I must confess I liked No. 3 best as it sounds like my desk with must keep bits!

The Bible seems to come in handy for a lot of things! 😉

(I think every desk has at least a corner littered with must-keep bits and pieces.)

  3. Not well versed with the Bible, but fishing through the mess for psalms really got me there. Kudos for penning a deep poem.!

  4. Like your optimism in fishing business…I’d prefer to order…:) ~ Cool!

  5. Very nice work! I could see the images brought about by your words,;).

  6. lot of fishing here….nice 🙂

  7. You talk of fishing…and you have caught much!

    • magicalmysticalteacher

      Caught you reading, didn’t I? 😉

I think I know how she feels.

  9. Happy Easter

    much love…

  10. Beautiful and moving. You evoked my grandfather…a fisherman among other things. I love him, and enjoyed his rising through your words.

    • magicalmysticalteacher

His rising? It almost sounds like a resurrection! 😉

  11. I love the different kinds of fishing…….

  12. I agree with Sherry! So much symbolism and so many ambiguities, very nice!

  13. An entertaining collection!

  14. Seeing as it is Easter Sunday, I really like your fishing expedition. Reminds me of the story of the few loaves and fishes that fed a throng and satisfied them all, passed around by disciples who were ‘only’ fishermen.

  15. Excellent haiku, as I’ve come to expect from you.

  16. These are lovely, mmt. Love the “fishing” theme.

  17. The whole gamut of fish and fishing brought to the fore. Lovely haiku set MMT! They are all great!

  18. These are all incredibly good. Number five really stood out, though. I always feel bad for women stuck with men like that.

  19. I can well relate to #5 – but one learns to like themselves.
