Sonoran Desert, Maricopa County, Arizona

the sacred mountain—
its way lies through the wastelands
how prickly the path
~~ ~~ ~~
the sacred mountain—
each pilgrim finds it crucial
for her spirit’s rest
~~ ~~ ~~
the sacred mountain—
malignant its detractors
scoffing at its fame
~~ ~~ ~~
the sacred mountain—
a pilgrim’s unvoiced yearning
yielding to the way
