Long shadows at day’s end, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona

As shadows lengthen,
ants snuggle down for the night,
their mother the sand.

Shadows lengthen as the day ends.

  1. Gentle words for a gentle scene.

  2. My favorite time of day, anywhere. Thanks for the shot, teacherman.

  3. Absolutely, and you’ve captured it well!

  4. Gorgeous photo! My favorite time of day when in AZ is when the sun goes down. The sunset colors are different every night and make everything look magical.

  5. The southerly autumnal sun allows for long and luxurious shadows. Where the desert can be unforgiving in the hot summer, now it looks much cooler and very inviting!

It is MUCH cooler now, Ralph, than even three weeks ago. Today’s high is expected to be 80—which feels downright frigid after 112!

  6. Definitely time for all of us to snuggle.

  7. Soft earthy magic that plays the drama of stillness.

  8. What a cool thought, the ants snuggling down in the sand. I love it.

  9. The words go so well with the sand and shadows in the photo

  10. I can almost smell the ocean air with this picture.

  11. Calming words and picture

  12. I like how at certain times of the day shadows slim down as if they have been on a diet. 🙂

  13. Oh I like that!! sand and mother…awesome haiku and your photo with the shadows tells the story like a wordless haiku. Wow!

So do I—they mean I can soon bed down for the night! 😉

  14. Love those ants snuggling down. Ours are also, too cold, Brrrr. 🙂
Would have commented earlier but WordPress was down for a while this afternoon.

  15. Creates a great image in my mind! 😀

  16. The day ends far too early. (My wintertime six-word reply. Thanks for joining this week!)

  17. Shells are the nicer children of sand!

  18. That’s a lovely photo.
