Another Whirl with Fay

Each haiku begins with a phrase shamelessly purloined from various haiku in Fay Aoyagi’s In Borrowed Shoes. (The first whirl with Fay Aoyagi is available here.)

~~ 1 ~~

hole in my sweater—
yearning for a scrap of yarn
for mending the gap

~~ 2 ~~

shadow with no name
perched atop the robin’s head
daring it to sing

~~ 3 ~~

snip of the scissors—
desecrating the blue dress
he gave her last year

~~ 4 ~~

a custody case—
burning the uncut transcript
seven years later

~~ 5 ~~

day for flying kites—
tiny specks in the distance
fighting their restraints

~~ 6 ~~

heat of the stone wall—
even my white umbrella
is wilting today

~~ 7 ~~

first dandelions
going to seed in my lawn—
delicate subject

~~ 8 ~~

for the butterfly
a post for a resting place
till the next milkweed

~~ 9 ~~

a praying mantis—
matins under the petals
of a yellow rose

~~ 10 ~~

red quince blooming
until the drunk gardener
misses with his shears

~~ 11 ~~

morning glory seeds
their plight remaining hopeless
while they lie on stone

~~ 12 ~~

a story inside
one dark stone in the river—
druidic voices

  1. How much you found in that stone..good things..not so good things…all of them magical – of course!

  2. Wonderful set.
Really must be hot if a white umbrella wilts….whew!
Love picturing those high flying kites!

  3. A wilting umbrella – that’s hot.. Love your set.

  4. the last one sounds so mysterious…beautiful set here…

  5. Like the humor in #10. A drunk worker can cause lots of headache and they are often not bothered. Great haiku set MMT!

    Hank

  6. The drama and ultimate freedom achieved of #4 really drew me in.

  7. Such amazingly intriguing vignettes, each with a story inside. I especially love your closing one, with the song of the druids.

  8. Always a joy to read these..such great visions they conjure up….I particularly loved the kites fighting their restraints….I know that feeling wanting to break free and Soar!

  9. besides north texas haiku blog,
you are another haiku writer who is considered haiku king.

  10. great haiku. my favorite was the dandelion (delicate subject).12 different stories just flowed out all at once? wow

  11. the first few haikus felt like about divorce or relationship gone sour. thr last part, blossoming of new life, like spring

  12. I always enjoy reading your haiku and although you often begin by using someone else’s words, you still bring them home and make them uniquely your own and they always hold relative and evocative content.

  13. A sad dark offering today for your readers MMT. Yes, there is hope in a few but poets must also write about all they see not only the joyful.

  15. Snakypoet (Rosemary Nissen-Wade)

You make pictures, stories and sometimes whole novels in just three lines!

  16. The all feel haunting, especially the last.
