Tanka Times Three

From this week’s smorgasbord of words, I have chosen: free, dash, flee, threat, scent, try

~~ 1 ~~

birth pangs at midnight
the poem in my belly
kicking to be free—
the dash to my writing desk
for a quick delivery

~~ 2 ~~

ravenous turtle
lumbering through the garden—
terrified gnats flee
from the threat of extinction
deep in the turtle’s gullet

~~ 3 ~~

From phantom kitchens
voluptuous scents erupt
over the city—
sniffing at the fragrant air,
I try to quell my hunger.

  1. The last one struck a chord with me. I have a street filled with takeaways behind my apartment and every evening my senses are assaulted by a mixture of aromas, in fact, I can smell kebabs right now. Excuse me, I have to pop out and grab one!

  2. Congrats on the first one, so pregnant with meaning 😉

  3. # 3 is classic MMT! One is governed by the stomach. Aroma of food is overpowering. Difficult to counter the pangs of hunger building up!

  4. Well this is quite a birth of words…a sublime mix of image and thought..that turtle is pretty scary too!

  5. I feel a connection with number 1. It took me days to create anything for these words.
