~~ 1 ~~
a town with no name
not found on any road map
where she wants to be
~~ 2 ~~
Thirty-seven goats
invade the apple orchard,
stripping each tree clean.
~~ 3 ~~
swooping from the sky
ravenous owl zeroes in
on a hapless mouse
~~ 4 ~~
her frigid fingers
fumbling with the top button
of her overcoat
~~ 5 ~~
noncommittal shrugs
from his wife of twenty years
to round out his day
~~ 6 ~~
zodiac lover
consulting her horoscope
for the seventh time
~~ 7 ~~
always debating
every possible option
with her garden shears
~~ 8 ~~
an icy sidewalk—
the old woman slips and slides
on the homeward way
~~ 9 ~~
Midwinter huddle—
the homeless men are cursing
their lack of warm coats.
~~ 10 ~~
pressing together
the edges of her knife cuts
to start their healing

  1. #7 is my favourite in this set…

  2. #2 my fave though am struck by your imagine use of word set

  3. Beautifully written 🙂

  4. Your usual delightful collection but the “Noncommital shrugs” is my favorite this week”.

  5. The last verse is an ingenious conclusion..each one built the story beautifully..melancholic perhaps but still sense of progression – and i love those was a hard word to fit in 😉

  6. Love what you did.. The moment of fumbling with a button in cold weather particularly apt.

  7. Oh, buttoning one’s overcoat with frigid fingers is a real pain!
Sigh about the noncommittal shrugs – it seems the marriage has gone stale.
Hope the homeless men encounter either warm coats or warm weather soon.

  8. I love each words poem and I was particularly struck by the first one as I have often felt that way!

  9. 37 goats sound very intriguing…esp. when they’re cleaning stuff….and what a power to press together ‘the edges of her knife cuts
to start their healing’! ~ Nice to read you, Magie.

  10. These are very vivid! Loved them!

  11. All good… #7 profound

  12. Snakypoet (Rosemary Nissen-Wade)

At the risk of repeating myself many times over, can’t tell you how much I like and admire the way you use the given words. What an imagination! And while it seems to me these are indeed valid haiku and senryu, you seem to have made the form your own – quite a feat!

  13. I really adore that first one! Wow!

  14. Number 8 makes me stiff with dislike for icy roads as I am a walker and public transportation user.

  15. 37 goats! You have brought back all of the trauma of our one and only goat. Thirty-seven fold!

A goat alone is a lonely goat. Tell me it ain’t so! 😉
