Christmas Music

 photo IMG_2326_zpsjdcq363c.jpg
A tiny Nativity set in a Yuma County, Arizona church

The music I adore most
Comes round but once a year.
They call it Christmas music,
It fills my heart with cheer.

I love to sing of Mary,
Of Joseph and the Child;
I love to sing of angels—
I’m sure they must be wild.

The shepherds in the pasture?
I sing their praises too,
For they ran to Bethlehem
To see the baby Jew.

The Magi on their camels,
Who traveled from afar
Found the Baby’s manger bed
By following a star.

And so, when winter deepens,
And earth is cold and drear,
I sing a song of people
Who cast aside their fear.

But what if, in the summer,
I sang a Christmas song?
Would all my friends desert me,
And tell me that I’m wrong?

I think I know the answer,
And this is what I know:
No scorn can silence music—
The notes will swell and grow.

What a triumphal finish! Lovely to think that music cannot be silenced.

  2. “No scorn can silence music—/ The notes will swell and grow.”…very true….

  3. Love the rhyme.

    here christmas is in summer
you can sing whatever you like
on the beach everyone is equal
    sandflies do not discriminate
    in who they bite:)

Thanks, Rall. It just messes with my mind to think that Christmas could be in summer and not “in the deep midwinter,” but how lovely to think that the beach is the great equalizer! Merry Christmas!

  4. One from the heart Magical and it soars – i think true Christmas music should be sung all year round..that would be the meaning of the season…not the few weeks people dash around.. sing loud and proud 😉

Thanks for your encouraging words, Jae! I think year-round Christmas music is a good idea too—although not the kind that blares in the shopping malls! Music from the heart…

The wild angels are the best part—you never know what they’re going to do next!
