Sound Bites

A crumbling wooden wagon wheel, Yuma Conservation Garden, Yuma, Arizona

~~ 1 ~~

in the corridor
of the nursing home at noon—
clicking of dentures

~~ 2 ~~

An old man stumbles,
then stoops to tie his laces—
winter afternoon.

~~ 3 ~~

Midwinter musing—
are there no doves anymore
to sing down the sun?

~~ 4 ~~

after last night’s flood—
slicing twisted clothesline cords
with a rusty knife

~~ 5 ~~

Midwinter musing—
could her own experience
help somebody else?

~~ 6 ~~

What explanations
need a dormant plum tree give
for its existence?

~~ 7 ~~

dandelion fluff—
the anarchy of autumn
riding on the wind

  1. especially liked 2 and 3…!!!

  2. i like ‘the anarchy of autumn’…

  3. 3 and 6 are my favorites. Love the image of doves singing down the sun,

  4. You must have been watching me when writing no.2.

  5. I’m very fond of 7. I really am caught by the perfectness of your description of dandelion fluff – airborne anarchy to patrician suburban lawns. I wish I came up with that description!

  6. Lovely!❤️ especially no 3 and 6 ❤️

  7. Rosemary Nissen-Wade

They’re all great . I particularly enjoyed the clicking dentures. 🙂

  8. Love your little bites. I always create a story to tie them. This time it is from the exterior to an interior view of those in the winter of their lives. I love the juxtaposition of non generative plum and the seeds of the dandelion, certainly not expected in autumn. It is the pattern of our lives that is the gift at the end.

  9. Ha, I love the clicking of dentures…..80 residents eating lunch create a determined din. Lol.

  10. Really like #3 and #5. And, as Sherry said, the clicking of dentures….must be quite a sound.

  11. The first one made me smile widely….can just hear it now 🙂 And that last one….whoa, such powerful imagery in that spectacular phrasing!!

  12. A bouquet of haiku
    A new and wonderful gift
    I read with pleasure

  13. Ha that clicking of dentures made me smile… but most of all like the dormant plum tree.

  14. Love all of these. The last two are my favorites.

  15. You have been very thoughtful this weekend.

  16. ROFL with no 1.

All good especially 6 and 7.

  17. 2 and 6 touch me the deepest

  18. 2,3&6 are my favorites. Beautiful haiku as always.
