Six Ways of Blackbird

~~ 1 ~~

late winter morning—
blackbird surveys his domain
from a chimney top

~~ 2 ~~

In weakness and woe
a weary pilgrim wanders,
blackbird at her side.

~~ 3 ~~

Blackbird on the wing
hears the hapless harlot’s cry
as her night begins.

~~ 4 ~~

A blackbird ignores
the blasts and blights of fortune
as she builds her nest.

~~ 5 ~~

a trickle of blood
from the blackbird’s open beak—
early morning crash

~~ 6 ~~

a curse and a cry—
and the blackbird disappears
for another year

  2. wonderful blackbird days…to me #1 is no. 1 🙂

  3. So many different facets of the life of blackbirds. I’m with Sumana. Favorite is #1 as well.

  4. Love these! #2 is my favorite.

  5. Certainly one of my favorites! The Blackbird, that stays to play, that shows the way, the one that knows me, too.

  6. I love this.. and I cannot avoid of doing a parallel to Wallace Stevens… those different views of a blackbird.

  7. I’m with Bjorn, and thought of Wallace Stevens “13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird”. Your haikus are lovely!

Poignant stuff indeed, which builds steadily from one haiku to another – the blood in the beak is an especially powerfully lingering image…

  9. I most love her building her nest, no matter what. It is what we women do. Smiles. Beautiful imagery in these wonderful blackbird poems.

  10. Beautifully eloquent these.. sigh especially no 3 ❤️

  11. That wooden bird creation is beautiful ~ and lovely cascading blackbird haiku ~ thanks,

Wishing you a Happy Week ahead ~ ^_^

  12. #4 is so powerful in the message…..to just keep building our nests in and through every season, no matter what our fortune….tending to our loved ones in spite of the outside world and its madness. Love it.

  13. The blackbird has much to teach and show us. And love the carving,

  14. Rosemary Nissen-Wade

I love these variations on your theme.

  15. Lovely aspects of balckbirdness. Beautiful observations. Enjoyed them all.

  16. There is so much sadness with your blackbird(s) that doesn’t seem like the blackbirds I knew in Britain who adopted gardens in the suburbs and were welcome visitors that did a lot of helpful work.

  17. ‘Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly’.

  18. Lots of textures in this shot. and your haikus are powerful.

  19. Love the cactus wren! These haiku are so excellent, that I cannot even pick a favorite!
