April is the cruellest month… (T.S. Eliot)

~~ 1 ~~
first week of April—
erasing from memory
my distant homeland
~~ 2 ~~
First week of April—
sorrow swallows my spirit,
keening shreds my tongue.
~~ 3 ~~
First week of April—
a cry stays stuck in my throat,
a cry of despair.
~~ 4 ~~
First week of April—
as the wrens and robins sing,
I claw at my eyes.
~~ 5 ~~
first week of April—
crawling back from despair’s brink
one song at a time

  1. Somehow I feel this needs an explanation. The untold stories are intriguing as is the relevance of the first week of April and the relationship to a motorbike to the haiku. My initial guess is that it is a sad anniversary and I am sorry for that although it could be pure inventiveness with the prompt words.

  2. A hard week but defeat rejected.

  3. when April truly is the cruellest month…nice set…

  4. April can be a struggle… but for me it’s mostly the return of light… But i sense a deeper mourning in your words.

  5. It does seem that April’s role in the calendar is to bring us back from ‘despair’s brink one song at a time.’ I will hold this thought this month.

  6. This leaves me want to know “the rest of the story”. Such angst!

  7. A Happy April to you

    much love…

  8. Crawling back one song at a time……….one can feel the depth of sadness in this collection of lines……….it seems like it must be an anniversary of some deep sorrow, each April. Very beautiful writing.

  9. “…I claw at my eyes.

    …crawling back from despair’s brink
    one song at a time”

Similar theme in my post this week, minus April, who couldn’t sing a tune for me 🙂

  10. April is truly the hardest month of them all….

  11. The first week of April, brings a tear from this reader…

  12. So much grief and mourning etched expertly into these….and I love that they culminate in the last one, ending with the hope of returning from the brink again!

  14. From valleys come mountaintops. Some take longer to reach than others.

  15. Yes, there is grief and sorrow here, but it ends in the hope that creativity will once again bring both healing and a soothing of the spirit.

  16. For me, it’s November, as the cruelest month, with July, for a close second, for various personal reasons. Have always seen April, as a month, filled with hope and brighter future, for me. Also, marks the first full month, my Fall/Winter depression is over.
