The middle child

The middle child,
feeling lost and upset,
goes for treatment
one day a week.
In the waiting room,
her older brother
chants nursery rhymes
and tells stories
in a vain attempt
to comfort her.
“Wait till you see the lunches
they serve at school next week,”
he says.
“Seven kinds of ice cream!”
But the disconsolate middle child
cares nothing for ice cream lunches.
All she wants is to rise up
out of her wheelchair
and walk.

  1. Just when I was wondering why wouldn’t anyone love 7 varieties of ice-creams, the climax answered my question. Touching one…

  2. It means so much to one who is adversely affected. To be deprived of ordinary pleasures can be most frustrating!

    Hank

  3. Such touching words, reminding us of those who are daily challenged, and how much we take for granted. I loved the wall art photo, by the way!

  4. A powerful piece Magical

  5. Yes, understandably, the joy of ice cream would pale before being able to walk!

  6. Wow that surprise at the end is surely a crunch
    Have a good Sunday

    much love…

  7. The desire to walk, to progress, is everything and real changer/mover for sure in any situation. The important observation here.

  8. A wonderful and sad conceit… reminding me that we take so much for granted with our ability to walk.

  9. Oh so sad, poor child.

  10. Aww 😦 this makes me realize that our problems are so insignificant compared to this..

  11. The middle child always has issues, but the added burden of the wheelchair makes your reader want to reach out and hug and console her. That is a gift you have been given,

    Elizabeth

  12. Sad and rooted in truth.

  13. Such an endearing moment

  14. What a wonderful and sympathetic poem.

  15. You’ve woven a whole story into this little vignettte.

  16. Good use of the words. Very creative.

  17. Rosemary Nissen-Wade

Oh dear, a sad scenario beautifully described. You make me love both these children.
