A Voice in the Night

DSC_0296 (2)
Winter sunset, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona.

She lifted her voice against the sun,
Cursing because the daylight was done.

The coming of night would make her feel blue,
For none of her dreams would ever come true.

She pillowed her head and turned off the light,
Preparing to face the terrors of night,

But then came a voice, a voice not her own,
Whispering things from the past she had known:

You are the daughter of wisdom and light,
The child of mercy and goodness and right.

Be not afraid of the terrors ahead.
Lie down and sleep, child, for safe is your bed.

Over her heart washed a wave of relief,
The voice in the night assuaging her grief.

  1. This is what I call ‘light’ that dispels darkness at the right moment. Beautiful.

  2. Amen to both voices: cursing at the end of day, and finding the light of truth in the night. This is powerful writing!

  3. Lisa at Greenbow

AAaahhhhh, that feeling of peace. Nothing like it.

  4. This one speaks my truth. Describes the darkness, but the powerful words bring a calmness and peace. Wonderful!!!

  10. Lile the rhyming couplets and this little reassuring prayer. I find peace and comfort in the quiet of the night. It is my most creative time.

  11. Lovely! This would make an inspiring poster.

  12. This is lovely. I find a certain peace in the night, that scatters during the day.
