Within a tiny shadow great surprises hide.
Come, and I’ll display for you what is held inside.
First, some blackbird laughter, threaded with fine silk,
Then some wine that sparkles, if you don’t like milk.
You’ll also see a comet blazing as it goes,
And something not as fiery: a pale desert rose.
Another thing you’ll find there (keep an open mind):
The deeds of righteous people, generous and kind.
The world holds more surprises than anyone can dream,
And in the darkest places, surprises reign supreme.
What? You don’t believe me? You think that I tell lies?
My advice to you, my friend: Open both your eyes!

  1. The world is such a beautiful place and I want it to remain that way for my children’s children too. We must be aware of the destroyers amongst us who are quite blind.

There are so many destroyers that it sometimes seems like a fool’s errand to try to counteract their destruction.

  2. “And in the darkest places, surprises reign supreme.” True, true. The unexpected always shows up here.

What would we do without those surprises in the darkness?

  4. So true… we look but we don’t see!!!

  5. Lovely poem with so much truth.

  6. You actually brought tears to my eyes. I love the whole premise, all of the images (especially the quiet core of the poem, “a pale desert rose”), and the closing rhetorical question and its response.

  7. The beauty is there Flowers among the weeds. Nice write

    much love…

  8. Gorgeous ❤️ especially that second stanza just took my breath away 🙂

  9. I love the hope that you convey! Wonderfully evoked!

  10. Yes! Astonishment and amazement are all around.

  11. First of all I really like the way you have rhymed each line! That makes reading poem so much fun!
There are so many things that can surprise us – and for that we need to keep an open mind and open eyes…very true 🙂
