Quickly the Night Comes
Quickly the night comes, sending out stars;
Children stuff lightning bugs into jars.
The bat chasing bugs will stop for a rest
After it catches the last pesky pest.
Ripples of darkness spread over the pond—
Shadows envelop each leafy palm frond.
Invisible creatures run to and fro—
We’d see them if they were running in snow.
Quietly, dear, let me sing you a song;
Moths near the streetlight won’t be there long.
The night is far gone, but not my love, dear—
Here at the frog pond I think that is clear.
In daylight or darkness, winter or spring,
I’ll sing by the pond, dear, to you I will sing.

You have captured the night…and much of what happens in darkness. I like ‘ripples of darkness’ and thinking of the poor moths near the streetlights! No matter in light or dark, we have to keep ‘singing.’
This is so beautiful ! I love imagining the scurrying of the small creatures of the night.
A little romance by moonlight hits the spot.
Such a “sweet,” poem. It reminds me of my childhood.
This is absolutely exquisitely drawn! ❤️ I love; “Ripples of darkness spread over the pond— Shadows envelop each leafy palm frond.” 🙂
Ah, what a sweet frolic! I heard birdsong yesterday.
I love that song in the end… sometimes I really miss warm nights, they are almost non-existent in Sweden…. when it’s warm there is no darkness, and if it’s dark it’s always too cold
What a beautiful heart song. Happy you dropped by my sumie Sunday
Much💟love
Perfect rhyme and a sweet story. I like the images and the song is lovely.
Lovely, twitchy portrait of evening 🙂
An ode to twilight.
I love how the whole thing is full with mystery–darkness, invisible creatures–but there is no fear, just pure joy… and song.
Sounds like a beautiful place to be.
Nice… I’ll take it. 🙂
This is one of the most beautiful poems you have posted. I really loved it.
Delightful! It could be a romantic utterance, but in my mind’s eye I see a cosy Grandma singing to a child.
What a charming ditty. Made my heart sing!
What an exciting night.
Love the rhythm of this one
