Send Me Silver Messages

Send me silver messages on wings of bees or bats.
Send them to the sad café, where I wear many hats:
Baker, barber, barkeep—even chairman of the board;
Table number three is mine, beside the safety cord.
Also in the library, where dancing Buddhas shine,
You may find me barely sober (I’ll be drinking wine).
Remember now, for safety’s sake, parking’s not allowed
Near the curb, or where bad news is breaking to the crowd.
If you can make some sense of this, you’re better than I am;
Farewell, dear friends, my journey starts—I’m off to Vietnam!

  1. I love your opening imagery – and the last line so cleverly woven in..left me breathless

  2. I like where you’ve kept safety 🙂

  3. May you be safe! But there is no place–certainly not in any of the war zones. This is an amazing poem.

      I feel as though the entire United States is a war zone right now—all these mass shootings, almost daily.

  4. No safety in crowds, whether drunk and rowdy, in a mob, or off to war. I’d like a chair at table three too please!

  5. This was a delight to read. I love the rhythm and rhyme. I’ll join you with the wine. I need it to survive the news any more. The horribleness is coming across the border too – the level of rhetoric is encouraging behaviours we are not used to seeing. It is far less numerous than in the US, but I see it popping up here and there. That guy needs to be gagged and gotten out of power. I wrote a VERY depressing poem to this prompt, but then posted a slightly less despairing one instead. Sigh.

  6. Luv where you are placed in the First Verse
    Happy Wednesday

  7. Wow love this very powerful very well written

  8. Our inability as humans to live peaceably together may even save the world when that perverted race is finally gone. We were given such a inventive brain but chose to abuse it and set about to destroy the world and each other. Think I will walk on all four legs in future and just say woof!

  9. Splendid take on the current state of affairs.
