Water or Chardonnay: A Weird Little Haibun

When the choice of drink is water or chardonnay, I usually take water. I don’t want to end up in some faraway place, sleeping under a bridge, and wonder how I got there. Nobody’s going to rescue me from my own stupidity. If someone asks why I prefer to eat by candlelight, I say, “It’s fine to dine in the dark, but the last time I tried that, I nearly ate my finger, mistaking it for a French fry. Don’t you think it’s important to be safe rather than sorry?”

Yellow butterfly,
will you meet me on the path
to the mountaintop?

  1. Finger food…YUM.
Not much for Chardonnay anyway, though I HAVE forgotten what coffee tastes like without a shot of kahlua!

  2. You make me want to have french fries! A lovely and introspective write 💘

  3. Super haiku and a great contrast between parts.

Ouch on that finger. I wan to rendezvous with butterflies right about now.

  5. May you follow that butterfly to hill or mountaintop. It will wait for you.

  6. This made me grin. I poured soup into my nose one time at a restaurant as I was intently watching a woman at another table.

  7. I’d probably be mistaking my finger for a fry
too if I drank too much Chardonnai.

  8. Your prose explains why I don’t drink alcohol. I just don’t like the idea of not being in control of my faculties. Humanity is already silly enough, why add to that mess?

And I love what your haiku say about the good old adage that the universe helps those that help themselves. Yep, that butterfly would be so much more willing to work with us, if we show that we are willing to work for it.

  9. I hate being drunk–and haven’t been for many years–the butterfly makes a much better companion

  10. Lisa at Greenbow

    Agree if you will
    No chardonnay on the way
    Water at he top 🦋

  11. Kestril Trueseeker

Between those two choices, I’ll take water. But I’ll definitely save a little to make my tea.

  12. Beverly Crawford

I don’t mind an occasional nip, but never to the point of not being in charge of my actions! Good luck with the yellow butterfly!

  13. Good common sense in this haibun … and the haiku dovetails beautifully, in that it completes and enhances what is expressed in the prose. I agree with your reflections, here. I think the world works more harmoniously when life is not constantly turned sideways, by bad choices.

  14. Don’t drink out especially if you are driving, However do try other wines to chardonnay as there a lots to enjoy.

  15. Susie Clevenger

It is better to have a clear head.. I do drink a glass of Cabernet, but never to excess.

  16. Nice answers to impertinent questions! And I love your closing haiku.

  17. Margaret Elizabeth Bednar

Butterflies are at the tops of mountains… I love watching them.

  18. (My apologies for a late response…covid- 19 had me busy! )

This made me laugh! A bit of comedy relief is essential for these gray times.
