Promise

Evening storm clouds may bring moisture to arid lands near Grants, New Mexico.

Autumn afternoon—
clouds drifting from the mountains
seem to promise rain.

Stones

Some little red stones
looking good enough to eat
top the blue glazed pot.

Blue Monday: Stained Glass

 photo SacredHeartFMTNM012_zps06b393e1.jpg
A stained glass window at Sacred Heart Church, Farmington, New Mexico.

A window stained mostly in blue
Can be quite relaxing, it’s true.
It soothes and it calms
All fears and all qualms.
There’s nothing quite like it for you!

Winter Is Coming

Mullein poking out from snow photo NMmullein_zps0eb40104.jpg
Dead mullein stalks poke out of the snow in northern New Mexico.

Winter is coming with sleet, ice, and snow;
Herons will shiver and so will the crow.

Rivers of snot will run from kids’ noses—
They won’t be smelling bouquets of roses.

Slippery sidewalks will make old folks fall;
Traffic on freeways will slow to a crawl.

But there are some places winter won’t touch:
India, Panama, Guinea, and such.

To people who live there, southerly folk,
Winter’s privations are merely a joke.

It’s all in your viewpoint, how winter looks.
Remember: Broth spoils with too many cooks.

Autumn by autumn
a blaze along the river
outshines every sun.
