Watching

Cholla cactus at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Southern Arizona
For cactus blossoms
I keep watching and waiting—
a crow watches me.

Cloudless

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Southern Arizona
On a cloudless day
not even crows fill the void
with their raucous songs.

Complicated

Ocotillo blossoms, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Southern Arizona
Shadow, bloom, and thorn—
how complicated the soul
of the wilderness!

Daggers

A variety of cholla cactus, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Southern Arizona
Whetted by the sun,
the cholla’s deadly daggers
keep all foes at bay.

Wren

Tiny cactus wren,
what about the great mountain
incites you to war?

Warriors

Two saguaro cacti seem to be battling each other at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Southern Arizona
Sometimes in this world you see things that are strange.
I once saw two cactuses out on the range,
And swear they were punching out each other’s lights—
It was one of those weird and wonderful sights.
I wonder if that’s the way things go on Earth:
Contentions beginning the moment of birth.
Does anyone think that all warring will cease,
So all of Earth’s creatures can revel in peace?
