Haiku and Senryu: 2nd Baker’s Dozen
Of the chrysalis
there is still a shred or two
unclaimed by the wind.
~~ ~~ ~~
By the shrewd habit
of kneeling in the kitchen
she found sustenance.
~~ ~~ ~~
For a slice of bread
you are slavering in vain—
be content with cake.
~~ ~~ ~~
Will You reel me in
when I wander far away
from Your endless love?
~~ ~~ ~~
Pick the tomatoes
before the earth goes dormant,
sing out each weed’s name.
~~ ~~ ~~
They were good people,
though they had no depth of soul—
the starlings miss them.
~~ ~~ ~~
What is it saying,
the apple crisp and golden,
to the rising moon?
~~ ~~ ~~
A small pool of light—
I contemplate with wonder
the wren that gulps it.
~~ ~~ ~~
I cobble meaning
out of stones dotted with moss,
buttered with lichen.
~~ ~~ ~~
At a roadside shrine
she makes one resolution:
to pay attention.
~~ ~~ ~~
Thirty hungry koi
roiling the small pond’s surface—
toss them haiku crumbs.
~~ ~~ ~~
A step at a time
down the broad but crooked path
you find what you need.
~~ ~~ ~~
Spend the next twelve days
staging one grand spectacle—
no one will forget.

Haiku and Senryu by the Dozen
Their old love letters—
she was saving them for him,
but then the wind raged.
~ ~ ~
Sometimes blazing grace
may drive you into deserts,
far away from friends.
~ ~ ~
Who can bear the loss
of hearth and home, health and kin?
Job knows the answer.
~ ~ ~
The yarn she told me
terrorized even the stars—
what was she thinking?
~ ~ ~
Despite the wailing
of women at the altar,
I drift off to sleep.
~ ~ ~
Ten thousand stitches
to sew the stars together—
are you the seamstress?
~ ~ ~
They wear no sweaters,
even when the wind shrieks down
from the snow-capped peaks.
~ ~ ~
Wind it seven times,
the string around your finger,
to remember me.
~ ~ ~
I was not allowed
to stop before I started
becoming empty.
~ ~ ~
It is a spirit,
not the one I expected,
whispering to me.
~ ~ ~
Shovel them under,
shards of all your broken dreams—
let them rest in peace.
~ ~ ~
For the faerie queene
seven offerings were left,
one a sacred plum.

Haiku and Senryu by the Dozen
There is no teacup
big enough to hold my joy—
it is spilling out.
~~ ~~ ~~
To find our way home,
we must follow the shepherds
through sheep-littered fields.
~~ ~~ ~~
A wound is the place
where you may hear glad tidings
hammering your heart.
~~ ~~ ~~
If you stay the course,
Haste will hide her face from you
as your feet plod on.
~~ ~~ ~~
Hay in the manger,
are you not in awe of him
who nestles in you?
~~ ~~ ~~
This is my decree:
When you have lost hope, set out
on new adventures.
~~ ~~ ~~
Christ in the desert
was not afraid of hunger,
though he had no bread.
~~ ~~ ~~
In holy silence
the fields and woodlands pondered
why the stars blinked out.
~~ ~~ ~~
Foretaste of heaven—
a single angel singing
simple little songs.
~~ ~~ ~~
In her inmost heart,
she mined unanswered questions—
jagged little gems.
~~ ~~ ~~
From the tree of peace
I have gathered all these fruits—
eat and be refreshed.
~~ ~~ ~~
She listened deeply,
but what she heard distressed her—
from her eyes fell frost.
