Six for Sunday

Dried teasel, Yavapai County, Arizona
~~ 1 ~~
autumn afternoon—
in the park two young women
kissing each other
~~ 2 ~~
watching the old dog
try to lift his left hind leg
to spray the fire plug
~~ 3 ~~
unexpected breeze
throws my paper boat off course—
autumn afternoon
~~ 4 ~~
leaves in the tea bowl
sinking down to the bottom—
I heed the omen
~~ 5 ~~
impossible task—
keeping the stone on my back
while running 5k
~~ 6 ~~
my neighbor’s mongrel—
how perfectly she retrieves
the little red ball

Haiku My Heart

Yavapai County, Arizona
Under ice-blue skies,
the scrub-oak-shrouded mountains
keep time with the moon.

Lovers of small words and small poems usually gather each Friday at Recuerda Mi Corazon to share their haiku. Because Rebecca is in San Miguel de Allende today and next Friday, this will be our gathering place. Welcome!
Riffs on Autumn

Cottonwood leaves with autumn color, Yavapai County, Arizona
~~ 1 ~~
her passion for trees
especially in autumn
when leaves turn golden
~~ 2 ~~
autumn afternoon—
hoping to find her lost keys
under yellow leaves
~~ 3 ~~
drifting near the edge
of a little woodland pool—
seven autumn leaves
~~ 4 ~~
autumn afternoon—
wandering with my lover
through the browning fen
~~ 5 ~~
autumn afternoon—
somehow the sky seems lighter
shrugging off the rain
~~ 6 ~~
late autumn twilight
making me blink once, then twice
in awe and wonder
~~ 7 ~~
With wild geese wheeling,
how can I count the autumns
that have flown away?
