Some of This, Some of That

~~ 1 ~~

My Lady Autumn,
I stumble like a drunkard
when you call my name.

~~ 2 ~~

If your tongue would sing,
you must woo Music Maiden,
from whom notes are born.

~~ 3 ~~

the music lesson—
ten thousand sleepy pigeons
cooing down the sun

~~ 4 ~~

One song for the world,
rasped by a dying raven—
shall I sing along?

~~ 5 ~~

A single lantern
cannot light a whole city,
but one prophet can.

~~ 6 ~~

Ominous thunder
drives the old monk to his knees—
koans fall to earth.

~~ 7 ~~

Minds that I have loved
crumbled to ash long ago—
flowered serpent, come.

~~ 8 ~~

It is a spirit,
not the one I expected,
whispering to me.

~~ 9 ~~

My father would say
that the tracks at the pond’s edge
can yield no answers.

~~ 10 ~~

black cat dips one paw
into circles of sunshine
on the kitchen floor

~~ 11 ~~

from her mouth strong words—
the tie that binds her always
to the one she loves

~~ 12 ~~

What trumps religion?
Surely the old man’s singing
to his ailing wife.

Fasting and praying,
she draws near the ancient ones—
they bid her to dance.

far from prying ears and eyes,
the unicorns graze.

Seven Circles

~~ 1 ~~

golden the glowing
driving darkness from my door
holy the circle

~~ 2 ~~

on a mountain ridge
drawing a simple circle
she protects herself

~~ 3 ~~

one fragile bubble
burning in circles of light—
there will be weeping

~~ 4 ~~

a circle of stones
rare as forgotten language
beckoning me near

~~ 5 ~~

in the next canyon,
a spacious place for camping—
cottonwood circle

~~ 6 ~~

black cat dips one paw
into circles of sunshine
on the kitchen floor

~~ 7 ~~

The sunflower ants,
dizzy with nectar, stagger
in circles of light.

The Dancers

The dancers allege
that nothing can take the place
of an all-night whirl.

~~ ~~ ~~

The dancers conceal
their true purpose in whirling
from midnight to sunrise.

~~ ~~ ~~

The dancers propose
a toast to the old fiddler,
who keeps them whirling.

in tongues heard eons ago—
stars still know the plot.

who can eclipse their beauty
by smudging the light?

that would lure me from the light,
keep my stumbling feet.
