I wish I had a Harley

IMG_5520
Art on a boarded-up building, Ajo, Arizona

I wish I had a Harley
Instead of my old Schwinn;
I’d open up the throttle,
Go faster than the wind.

But all I have to take me
Someplace at a low cost
Is the bike I’ve had so long
That all its sheen is lost.

Blue Monday: Open by Chance

IMG_5550
Sign outside a shop that sells an assortment of old things (often called antiques) in Ajo, Arizona

“Open by chance,” the blue signboard says,
Maybe at seven or nine.
Or maybe not till the sun goes down—
Whenever, that’ll be fine.

You never know what you’ll find at Ray’s—
It might be trash or treasure;
So come to Ray’s as much as you can,
Then some more for good measure.

Woman, why are you
always doing holy work
on your hands and knees?

Melody

IMG_5199
The Sonoran Desert landscape near Ajo, Arizona

On which page is it written,
In which trustworthy book,
That barren places warrant
No glance or second look?

The unassuming places
Hold more than eye can see,
And for those with ears to hear,
A soulful melody.

Grace

IMG_5190
Teddy bear (or jumping) cholla cactus near Ajo, Arizona

The desert is better than books,
No matter how barren it looks;
There’s grace to be found
In dry, dusty ground,
In spite of the absence of brooks.

April is the homing month
When artists long for space
To sculpt and paint and scribble
To serve the human race.

Sometimes a lucky artist
Will find a place called home;
But if her luck should run out,
Then she is bound to roam.

Good people aren’t too hard to find,
And some of the best come to mind:
The Elks are a group
That never would stoop
To doing things that are unkind.
