Blue Monday: Hummingbirds

IMG_5500
Wooden hummingbirds mounted on a wall, Ajo, Arizona

Two hummingbirds, flitting at dawn,
Were searching for nectar, not prawn.
They found some at last,
And had a great blast
Imbibing—and then they were gone!

Wild

Late afternoon in the Sonoran Desert, near Ajo, Arizona

In wild places, untamed shadows thrive.

Blue Monday: Desert Artists

IMG_5397
A mural in Artists Alley, Ajo, Arizona

Can a desert artist ever truly thrive?
Can she sell enough art to keep herself alive?
Or will she simply languish, dogged by poverty?
If you know the answers, tell them now to me!

Painted Sky

In the painted sky
three notes from coyote’s mouth
linger until dawn.

The Plan

Is there anyone to feed
The coyote in his need?
Who will soothe the fevered bird
With cool water and kind word?

Surely needed aid will come,
Unannounced by fife and drum,
Even as a stranger’s hand
Tends God’s creatures as God planned.

Who

Someone in the desert needs a helping hand;
Someone needs some water in this thirsty land.

Who will help the stranger out of her distress?
Who will offer comfort in the wilderness?

Blue Monday: Door

 photo IMG_5538_zpshvcwjshy.jpg
Door on an abandoned building, Ajo, Arizona

Behind the old battered blue door
There’s emptiness, and nothing more.
Not even a mouse,
A cricket or louse
Is hiding behind the blue door.

Winter afternoon—
a dove lays down her last song
on a rusting rail.

Chilling

 photo IMG_5279_zpspt0emjfw.jpg
Saguaro cactus on the outskirts of Ajo, Arizona

A cactus alone on a hill,
When winter came, took a great chill;
It sneezed and it snoozed,
It freezed and it froozed,
That cactus alone on a hill.

A lone saguaro
pierces the clouds at sundown
with its deadly spines.
