Peace

IMG_5193
Evening descends on mountains near Ajo, Arizona.

Crow on the mountain,
must you shatter evening’s peace
with your wagging tongue?

Blue Monday: Rocket Ship

IMG_5376
Mural in Artists Alley, Ajo, Arizona

My rocket ship is blasting off—
Won’t you come with me?
We’ll sail a million miles or more
Through a starry sea,

Where deep within the Milky Way
Weird fish blink and gleam,
And fishers tell the strangest tales
As they wait and dream.

Storm

Storm clouds gather near Ajo, Arizona

Little cactus wren,
will your nest be torn to shreds
by the coming storm?

Blue Monday: Desert Family

IMG_5456
Detail from a mosaic on a community wall, Ajo, Arizona

We’re a desert family,
We know the ways of stones,
Cactus wrens and rattlesnakes—
The desert’s in our bones.

To snatch us from the desert
Would make our poor hearts ache,
For desert-dwellers cannot thrive
Beside an azure lake.

I wish I had a Harley

IMG_5520
Art on a boarded-up building, Ajo, Arizona

I wish I had a Harley
Instead of my old Schwinn;
I’d open up the throttle,
Go faster than the wind.

But all I have to take me
Someplace at a low cost
Is the bike I’ve had so long
That all its sheen is lost.

Blue Monday: Open by Chance

IMG_5550
Sign outside a shop that sells an assortment of old things (often called antiques) in Ajo, Arizona

“Open by chance,” the blue signboard says,
Maybe at seven or nine.
Or maybe not till the sun goes down—
Whenever, that’ll be fine.

You never know what you’ll find at Ray’s—
It might be trash or treasure;
So come to Ray’s as much as you can,
Then some more for good measure.
