Twice I Thought I Saw a Flame

Twice I thought I saw a flame
When the shapeless angel came.
Pure and bright she blazed near me;
In her hand she held a key.

“This unlocks your heart’s desire,
Be it water, earth, or fire.
You must choose what works for you,
Then will I your bidding do.”

Long I stood in awe and stared,
While her visage blazed and flared.
How I trembled, how I ached!
My flesh quivered and I quaked!

Then I spoke with fearful voice:
“This I ask, this is my choice:
Like you let me be a flame
Ever wilding, never tame.”

“Done!” she cried. “That I’ll allow!
I’ll set you ablaze right now!
Wear this holy fire in grace!
Every mortal, hide your face!”

Many years have passed since then,
Years beyond all mortal ken;
Still I flare and still I blaze,
And I will for endless days.

Angel

DSC_0391
A winding path, Yuma Conservation Garden, Yuma, Arizona

A father bends
to help his little girl
who has skinned her knee
while running.
Somehow her legs gave way
and she stumbled in the gravel
at the sidewalk’s end.
He kisses the wound
again and again, murmuring,
“It’s all right, angel, it’s all right.”
Smiling back at him
through tears, she says,
“Thank you, Daddy.
You’re an angel too.”
Then the big angel spreads his wings
and carries his little angel home.

Songs of Shattered Stars

~~ 1 ~~

deep in the meadow
fleeces drenched with dew at dawn
seven drowsy sheep

~~ 2 ~~

waxing the front hall
until the oaken boards shine
reflecting her face

~~ 3 ~~

in a country church
seven old evangelists
shouting out good news

~~ 4 ~~

six-year-old gymnast
twisting her lissome body
into pretzel shapes

~~ 5 ~~

touching the house wren
just before it lifts its wings
to flee my finger

~~ 6 ~~

bewildered pigeon
searching the clean-swept plaza
for even one crumb

~~ 7 ~~

worsted wool sweaters
for sale at bargain prices
the first day of spring

~~ 8 ~~

three cunning women
one an angel in disguise
sifting through rubbish

~~ 9 ~~

beyond the orchard
the place where young boys wrestle
each day after school

~~ 10 ~~

coming to bless me
with songs made of shattered stars—
old shaman at dawn

Angel, do you see
reindeer coursing through the sky—
or are you just shy?
