Playing her part

Sunset, Puerto Nuevo, Baja California Norte, México
She quiets her mind and opens her arms,
Embracing the ocean and stars;
Even the planets draw near as she breathes
And blesses both Venus and Mars.
Yoga sustains her day in and day out,
A peace settles over her soul;
She’s playing her part, although it is small,
Her part in the glorious whole.

Sand

Puerto Nuevo, a fishing village south of Tijuana in Baja California Norte, México
Little grains of beach sand
Scattered on the street;
Little grains of beach sand—
Watch your tender feet!
There among the cobbles
Lie the prickly grains,
Guaranteed to give you
Aches and bitter pains!

Mirror

Reflected street scene, Los Algodones, Baja California Norte, México
A window is a mirror
Reflecting what I see;
Perhaps a car or shadow
Appears just right to me.
Or maybe I am hoping
That what I see is true;
Is the sky, for instance, pink,
Or is it really blue?

Beach

Puerto Nuevo, Baja California Norte, Mexico
Yosa Buson’s haiku about a broom and a beach inspires me to write a new haiku:
The short night—
a broom thrown away
on the beach.
~~ ~~ ~~
a tree for her broom
old woman sweeping the beach
just before nightfall
~~ ~~ ~~
Imagine a broom tidying the beach.
