Voice of Silver

Desert willow (Chilopsis linearis), Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Southern California.

From the children’s nursery comes a Silver Voice:
“The Willow Tree seems lost now, and you have no choice
But to seek until you find her, seek both near and far,
Seek beneath the stump and boulder, seek where dragons are.
Do not let unrest dissuade you from the task at hand.
Courage, sister! Courage, brother! Don’t you understand
That skies and stars and planets all depend on you?
Gird yourselves with courage, and do what you must do!
Destroy fierce Dragon Burdock that threatens Willow’s ways;
Then, with all things great and small, in peace live out your days.”

We hear you, Voice of Silver, we hear you, Voice of Old;
With courage as our mantle, we’ll do as we are told.

Jump-Rope Rhymes

Whether you divide or add,
Snow’s not green, you silly dad.

Breeze beneath the bright blue sky,
Teach me how to multiply.

Poppies then and poppies now,
Poppies for my uncle’s cow.

If an orange could subtract,
We’d be doomed—now, that’s a fact!

Prayer in Time of Drought

 photo 73cdc233-8d11-40f0-9f92-54dc6cc9e3cd_zpsr2b6d26g.jpg

Lord, the little plants need water.

Send Your healing rain.

Let the sound of its falling

refresh my weary soul

as I walk barefoot through the garden,

damp earth beneath my feet,

thinking of all Your marvelous ways—

how You never force Yourself upon me,

but like light that warms or blinds,

You come to me each day,

inviting me to choose,

and in this time of drought

I choose blindness.

Dazzle me with Your presence

in each drop of rain.

Tokens of the Way

~~ 1 ~~

Rocking in her chair,
the wizened grandmother
dreams of growing tall.

~~ 2 ~~

each Sunday morning
stirring the pancake batter
with a wooden spoon

~~ 3 ~~

Halfway to nowhere,
while longing to be somewhere,
she loses her map.

~~ 4 ~~

needing words of grace
to sustain her famished soul—
bread is not enough

~~ 5 ~~

on a rock alone
daughter of the sea lion
fending off suitors

~~ 6 ~~

sipping from the glass
while slapping at mosquitoes—
sloshes of whisky

~~ 7 ~~

the seams of her dress
unthreading in the brilliance
from a thousand suns

~~ 8 ~~

crisp October air—
she hikes the mountain pathway
breathing clouds of frost

~~ 9 ~~

shattered glass and thorns—
beneath her feet these tokens
of the way to come
