The Rose
The flower that’s known as a rose
Is beautiful, everyone knows.
Its petals are fair—
No argument there!—
That beautiful blossom, the rose.

Awesome
The rose’s beautiful blossom
Is never known to play possum;
It’s bright and it’s bold,
A sight to behold—
Some even say that it’s awesome!

Saguaro flowers

Saguaro cactus blossoms, Yuma Conservation Garden, Yuma, Arizona
Saguaro flowers glowing
Against the bright blue sky
Fill me with greatest pleasure,
And here’s the reason why:
I think there’s nothing finer
Than seeing a white bloom
Juxtaposed against the sky
To chase away my gloom.

Gifts

A seasonal wall hanging in a Yuma County, Arizona church
Gold, frankincense, myrrh—
but where are the plum blossoms
for the one we seek?

Singing

Organ pipe cactus blossom, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
singing in wonder
before the cream-white blossom—
one dove joins my song

Twilight

Organ pipe cactus (Stenocereus thurberi) blossom, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
Not a breath of wind
ruffles the cactus blossom
at the twilight hour.
