If You Are Not a Reader

If you wait until the end comes, friend—
the end of the world, I mean—
to pick up a book and read,
you will never find out
how love and lust,
though cousins, differ,
and why one is far superior to the other.
Luck may sometimes nudge you in the right direction,
toward love and not toward lust,
but how lucky can you be if you are not a reader?

Melody

IMG_5199
The Sonoran Desert landscape near Ajo, Arizona

On which page is it written,
In which trustworthy book,
That barren places warrant
No glance or second look?

The unassuming places
Hold more than eye can see,
And for those with ears to hear,
A soulful melody.

Today

An old oak topples—
what better day than today
to open a book?

Melange of autumn leaves near the banks of Cache la Poudre River, Fort Collins, Colorado

among the brown ones
a single red maple leaf—
autumn’s tattered texts
in the middle of a book
that the author never ends

No Idea

She had no idea
that merely sitting
with a book in her hands
on the bench
outside the shop
where records were sold
would be her invitation
to go elsewhere
along a way that she could
neither walk nor run—
as if she were a letter
dropped in a mailbox
sorted by a hundred hands
until at last she
reached her destination
slipped through a narrow
slot in her
lover’s front door, and
announced her presence.

summer evening
a breeze turns leaves over
abandoned book

fishermen bait the shadows
hoping to catch a fresh word
