clear blue autumn sky—
great joy, albeit briefly,
before the first snow

Where and Why

The Pacific Ocean reaches shore yards away from the U.S.-Mexico Border at Border Field State Park, California.
Where are the children?
Why does the sea seem to weep
as autumn draws near?

Shade

Framed by a tree at St. Thomas Indian Mission Church, Winterhaven, California, a view unfolds of the irrigated farmland in Yuma County, Arizona.
In a spot of shade
I pause for sips of water—
summer’s long journey.

Scream

An almost cloudless day makes it easy for raptors to hunt in California’s Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
A few passing clouds
can’t mute a hawk’s piercing scream—
the field mice tremble.

Blue Monday: Distant Mountain

Colorful aspen trees brighten a hillside in California’s Inyo National Forest.
From a distant mountain, surrounded by blue sky,
I hear a raven calling, and I wonder why.
Perhaps he has a message that I need to hear,
Or maybe it’s just nonsense—who will make it clear?
