Praise

Crickets chime your praise,
mower that no longer zings,
scissoring the grass.

Reasons

Each haiku begins with a phrase taken from A New Moon by Bruce H. Feingold.
~~ 1 ~~
towards a high plateau
her labor at this altitude
for the slightest breath
~~ 2 ~~
on a granite ledge
she attempts to justify
her reasons to jump
~~ 3 ~~
the darkest silence
broken by a single chime
of the druid’s bell
~~ 4 ~~
way-worn traveler
trundling down a twisting path
till it meets the sea
~~ 5 ~~
swirling in the dust
where a crevice meets the sky—
ecstatic dervish
~~ 6 ~~
the bright graffiti
plunging her into despair
this foggy morning
~~ 7 ~~
lying wide awake
she masticates dry saltines
for a comfort food
~~ 8 ~~
shoulder to shoulder
two old queers dressed in leather
shambling down the street
~~ 9 ~~
swallows skim the dusk
making no alliance with
bats or mosquitoes
~~ 10 ~~
the doves call louder
as though they have a vision
of impending doom
~~ 11 ~~
a green sea turtle
straddling a hole in the sand
where she lays her eggs
~~ 12 ~~
a final haiku
something more combustible
than the ones before

Whirling On

Each haiku begins with a Wordle word.
~~ 1 ~~
Maybe a raven
knows more about nasturtiums
than ever I will.
~~ 2 ~~
miles beyond this place
thirty or forty or more
a ruined garden
~~ 3 ~~
words lost long ago
under bison bones bleaching
on Kansas prairies
~~ 4 ~~
scorch marks on his shirt—
first signs of her defiance
of his tyranny
~~ 5 ~~
chime and tambourine
and incense in the temple—
bridges between worlds
~~ 6 ~~
trite conversation
over day-old glazed doughnuts
at the sad café
~~ 7 ~~
spell of cold weather—
taking out of the closet
her wool kimono
~~ 8 ~~
land covered with snow—
corn hidden from hungry geese
and foraging mice
~~ 9 ~~
spirit of the quilt
wrapping her in dreams of peace
though she sleeps alone
~~ 10 ~~
aim of the hunter
sighting a mandarin duck—
how his bow trembles
~~ 11 ~~
mind of the pilgrim
distracted by the bedbugs
in the wayside inn
~~ 12 ~~
sign of good fortune
the year’s first calligraphy
brushed in crimson ink

December Whirl

~~ 1 ~~
birth of her firstborn
on this silent, holy night—
the pale young mother
~~ 2 ~~
a young mother’s sigh
consolation of cattle
two roosters chime in
~~ 3 ~~
the new arrival
a stray dog from the village
sniffing at the child
~~ 4 ~~
Laughing villagers,
oblivious to the child,
stumble to their homes.
~~ 5 ~~
(alone)
~~ 6 ~~
(scar)
~~ 7 ~~
(ingest)

Sleepless

Fierce things pierce my dreams,
causing short and sleepless nights—
distant church bells chime.
