If You Dance

If you dance, you’ll need some salt.
Tumble down into the vault,
Where the salt is mixed with wind—
No, my dear, it’s not been tinned!

Best to take the salt at once,
Lest you turn into a dunce,
Crying with the living dead,
Who do not care what you’re fed.

Still, the best is yet to come:
See the dead man bind the drum
To his forehead with a string?
And you thought it was just bling!

Do not dread what is to come;
Though the dead man beats his drum
At least he’s not beating you!
All is well, and this is true.

The middle child

Masked girl mural photo DSC_0024_zpsniik1fw3.jpg

The middle child,
feeling lost and upset,
goes for treatment
one day a week.
In the waiting room,
her older brother
chants nursery rhymes
and tells stories
in a vain attempt
to comfort her.
“Wait till you see the lunches
they serve at school next week,”
he says.
“Seven kinds of ice cream!”
But the disconsolate middle child
cares nothing for ice cream lunches.
All she wants is to rise up
out of her wheelchair
and walk.

through hot desert nights
desperation drives their dance
naked on the springs

the rusty bedsprings—
nestling in each coil some sleep
summer nights forgot

The Dance

 photo CarpeDiemLogowinter_zps46fda3d2.jpg

old haiku poet
thinks herself an amateur
yet the dragons dance

~~ ~~ ~~

On a moonless night
she prefers to dance alone
down a nameless street.

~~ ~~ ~~

Daughter of the moon,
in a courtyard filled with smoke
you dance with angels.

~~ ~~ ~~

Sunflower Maiden,
why are you so reluctant
to dance in winter?

~~ ~~ ~~

singers and dancers
shaking their timbrels and hips—
O holy rhythm!

~~ ~~ ~~

What are the chances
that someone dancing at noon
could number the stars?
