Discarded cup, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona

autumn leaks away
from a broken-handled cup—
desert drinks the dregs

Drink

November morning glory, Riverside County, California

on my daybreak walk
a drink of wayside color—
these morning glories

First Whirl of February

 photo 236_zpshruw2plv.jpg

The first line of each breath-of-a-poem is taken from phrases found in A Year in the World by Frances Mayes.

~~ 1 ~~

their morning coffee—
spring, summer, fall, and winter
taking it with cream

~~ 2 ~~

on the balcony
sharing an afternoon drink
fragrant vin rosé

~~ 3 ~~

on an envelope
one thin line of poetry
trailing to the edge

~~ 4 ~~

clutching photographs
faded ones from long ago
in her tight right hand

~~ 5 ~~

a votive candle
casting a shadowy spell
in the holy place

~~ 6 ~~

through the spice bazaar
following an old woman
laden with saffron

~~ 7 ~~

open till midnight—
a sign taped to the window
restoring our hope

~~ 8 ~~

on a lamp table
two little stacks of spare change
enough for bus fare

~~ 9 ~~

from her only son
a letter written with flair—
loops and flourishes

~~ 10 ~~

a heap of rubble
where the freeway bridge once stood—
earthquake aftermath

Quirky Quartet

165 photo 1652_zps5f883d88.jpg

~~ 1 ~~

drilled into the cliff
six holes filled with misfortunes
borrowed from the trolls

~~ 2 ~~

a wish, a whistle,
a pit in which to drink ale—
chimneyside dreaming

~~ 3 ~~

porcelain habits
shatter into deadly shards—
caveat emptor

~~ 4 ~~

Split the percale sheet,
rip out the mattress stuffing—
darkness comes at noon.

La Divina Pastora

 photo ZacatecasDec11706_zps84fad7be.jpg
La Divina Pastora (The Divine Shepherdess), artist unknown, Museo Zacatecano Zacatecas, México

In her dreams
she gambols with lambs—
white and black.

~~ ~~ ~~

Holy Shepherdess,
lead us to the rivulet,
where your sheep may drink.
