No Saddle

gazing at the text
from her lover far away—
a taste of honey

~~ ~~ ~~

stifling afternoon
without the cooling breezes
she was hoping for

~~ ~~ ~~

Sweltering June day—
the old abbot stubs his toe
near the temple gate.

~~ ~~ ~~

nursing home at dusk—
the glint in her eyes dimming
as she sees the end

~~ ~~ ~~

no saddle, no reins
on the untamed horse called death—
her wild ride forward

Pains and Pleasures

Each breath-of-a-poem begins with a line taken from The Surrender Tree by Margarita Engle.

~~ 1 ~~

shaded by mangos
two old men going for broke
telling more tall tales

~~ 2 ~~

fragrant white flowers—
a glint of midday sunlight
sharpening their scent

~~ 3 ~~

hands of the women
lifted in ecstatic praise
to the rising sun

~~ 4 ~~

deep in the forest
where mossy old trees sway—
a whiff of danger

~~ 5 ~~

the ears of a horse
disappearing at sundown—
midwinter madness

~~ 6 ~~

a hat on a stick—
one look and ravenous crows
flee to the next field

~~ 7 ~~

on hidden beaches
the fierce and oppressive hush
of desolation

~~ 8 ~~

the darting of bats
bears witness to succulent
insects in the air

~~ 9 ~~

protected by words
that keep every woe at bay—
two praying women

~~ 10 ~~

chocolate and coffee—
our guilty Sunday pleasures
an hour before Mass

Seeking One Ripe Plum

167 photo 1671_zpsf79ecbb4.jpg

~~ 1 ~~

Seeking one ripe plum,
I approach the laden tree
with a grateful heart.

~~ 2 ~~

seeking one ripe plum
behind the blue pantry door—
no one has a key

~~ 3 ~~

Seeking one ripe plum
to split among my children—
each will taste a slice.

~~ 4 ~~

seeking one ripe plum
to the east of the grain field—
three crows menace me

~~ 5 ~~

seeking one ripe plum
to give to the single mom
in Apartment 3

~~ 6 ~~

Seeking one ripe plum
I scratch my head in wonder
before the gnarled tree.

~~ 7 ~~

seeking one ripe plum—
depending on the moon’s phase
I might find seven

~~ 8 ~~

seeking one ripe plum
while the player piano
rolls out tinkly tunes

~~ 9 ~~

seeking one ripe plum
for the youngest of my sons—
his birthday present

~~ 10 ~~

Seeking one ripe plum—
the glint in her eye tells me
she’ll split the bounty.

~~ 11 ~~

seeking one ripe plum
on a level garden path
wingless butterfly

~~ 12 ~~

seeking one ripe plum
while spiders attach their webs
to my eyes and ears
