There’s Wisdom

There’s wisdom in what’s dulcet,
And wisdom in what’s tart.
The old grow ripe with longing
For youth’s resilient heart.

Time proves our ground of being
To be both false and stale.
Come, my friend, let’s toast the dead
With green and bitter ale.

Jump-Rope Rhymes

Whether you divide or add,
Snow’s not green, you silly dad.

Breeze beneath the bright blue sky,
Teach me how to multiply.

Poppies then and poppies now,
Poppies for my uncle’s cow.

If an orange could subtract,
We’d be doomed—now, that’s a fact!

Organic Riffs

~~ 1 ~~

organic cherries—
red and ripe and luscious
in a blue-green bowl

~~ 2 ~~

our midsummer’s feast—
dining on organic figs
and wedges of cheese

~~ 3 ~~

organic apples—
whining about the bruises
that soften their flesh

~~ 4 ~~

organic silence—
good news for the old poet
scribbling at midnight

~~ 5 ~~

ripe organic plums—
ants come from three miles away
for the summer feast

~~ 6 ~~

my shoes coming loose—
organic cotton laces
crumbling into dust

~~ 7 ~~

for ripe fruit she pants—
bunches of fat purple grapes
organic, luscious

Riddles

Low-lying woodland near Cache la Poudre River, Fort Collins, Colorado

my little green lawn
dreams about the pampas grass
I dream of the stars*

even woodland water pools
are filled with sacred riddles

In a pear orchard
the nightingale’s twittering
ripens the green fruit.
