Over the Coffin

original

Over the coffin
three wizened hags burn incense—
long dead is their queen.

~~ ~~ ~~

over the coffin
a pall the hue of sunset—
army widow keens

~~ ~~ ~~

over the coffin
no moral judgments uttered
by the grieving band

Temple Precincts

original

A flabby old priest,
recumbent in the temple,
leers as pilgrims pray.

~~ ~~ ~~

An indignant priest
shoves aside the woman’s gift
with abusive shouts.

~~ ~~ ~~

stench of holiness
rising in clouds of incense—
morning sacrifice

Incense

Ironwood (Olneya tesota) in bloom, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona

Never uprooted,
ancient ironwood still blooms—
sweet desert incense.
