Afternoon

A nearly cloudless blue sky welcomes visitors to the Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona.
winter afternoon—
instead of snow, some shadows
and a lonesome dove

Felled

A fallen ironwood tree, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona.
Like a great tree felled
you crashed to the earth broken
and forever stilled.

Where

Shadows under an ironwood tree, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
Where are the doves this afternoon?

Far away from the ocean

A lone ironwood tree stands out against the sky, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
Far away from the ocean,
Surrounded by desert sands,
Swathed in the midday silence,
A stalwart tree still stands.
Gulls and plovers are absent,
But cougars still snarl and scream
Here in this land where oceans
Are only a fleeting dream.
