Limerick Break

Whose back does the earth rest upon?
An elephant, raven, or swan?
Perhaps it’s a gannet
That holds up the planet
That all of us humans live on!

A stack of good books by your bed
Is better than any old med.
So, here’s to your health,
Vim, vigor, and wealth—
Make sure that you get them all read!

A teacher too weary to teach
Decided to head for the beach.
“I need to unwind,
I hope you don’t mind—
I’m putting myself out of reach.”

Paradox

Leave the paradox behind!
Free your spirit, free your mind!
See in black or white instead—
Don’t hold two things in your head!

Balance is so overrated
And your mind will soon be freighted
By attempts to hold at once
Two opposing forces, dunce!

Balance

I thought that I could balance a feather on a rock,
But though I tried it often, the feather ran amok,
And went wherever feathers go when feathers go astray—
But I have yet to give up hope that I’ll succeed one day.

Starting Over

Starting over’s hard to do;
I don’t like it, how ’bout you?

Starting over is a pain—
Such a struggle in my brain!

Starting over makes me think
My brief life is on the brink.

Starting over, liked by some,
Makes me want to suck my thumb.

Not Enough Money

Not enough money, yes, this is the song
I sing at daybreak and sing all day long.

Not enough money to travel to France,
Not enough money for sweaters or pants;

Not enough money for coffee or tea,
Not enough money for sailing the sea.

But laughter is free, so I laugh a lot.
As for more money, I don’t give a jot!

Whose Back?

Whose back does the earth ride upon?
An elephant, raven, or swan?
Perhaps it’s a gannet
That holds up the planet
That all of us humans live on!

Carpe Diem

“Seize the day!” my mother said.
“Seize the day—you’ll soon be dead!”

“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” said Dad,
“Willie is a proper lad.

Why should Willie seize the day?
Plan ahead is what I say.”

While they argued with each other,
My dear dad and my dear mother,

I slipped out and went to play.
So, I guess, I seized the day!

Above the Fray

A teacher rose above the fray,
And this is how ’twas done:
She stayed in bed for one whole day,
Disguised as an old nun.

She prayed to goddesses and gods,
Forgetting all her ills;
Her praying helped her beat the odds,
And do it without pills.
