Spring and Other Things

~~ 1 ~~

in a plain black dress
she welcomes spring to the hills—
the soldier’s widow

~~ 2 ~~

dreaming of springs past
when she walked with her father
through the plum orchard

~~ 3 ~~

a dazzling array
of fruits in the marketplace—
boy filches a plum

~~ 4 ~~

First full week of spring—
they speak only of the light
drenching the meadow.

~~ 5 ~~

an open doorway—
throwing away all constraints
to cross the threshold

~~ 6 ~~

An open window—
this morning the mockingbirds
are making her sad.

~~ 7 ~~

after spring’s first rain
memories of her childhood
sprouting fresh and green

~~ 8 ~~

blocking out the sobs
of the child who’s lost her coins
at the carnival

~~ 9 ~~

third full week of spring—
the menace of a sleet storm
freezing lilac buds

December Whirl

~~ 1 ~~

birth of her firstborn
on this silent, holy night—
the pale young mother

~~ 2 ~~

a young mother’s sigh
consolation of cattle
two roosters chime in

~~ 3 ~~

the new arrival
a stray dog from the village
sniffing at the child

~~ 4 ~~

Laughing villagers,
oblivious to the child,
stumble to their homes.

~~ 5 ~~

(alone)

~~ 6 ~~

(scar)

~~ 7 ~~

(ingest)

Another Whirl with Solomon

 photo 189_zpse79189b0.jpg

Each tiny poem begins with a line from Chapter 2 of “Song of Solomon,” taken from the King James Bible.

~~ 1 ~~

the singing of birds
gathering worms for their chicks
in the hidden nests

~~ 2 ~~

the rain is over
for seven years and a day—
empty husks rattle

~~ 3 ~~

upon the mountains
a rich harvest of pollen
from the cedar trees

~~ 4 ~~

voice of the turtle
bent and broken with sorrow
as it plods along

~~ 5 ~~

the little foxes
able to fend for themselves
but choosing not to

~~ 6 ~~

the winter is past—
a breeze rising from the south
coaxes seeds to sprout

~~ 7 ~~

shadows flee away
leaving darkness in their wake
on the barren plain

~~ 8 ~~

among the lilies
scattered patches of hoarfrost—
summer comes too soon

~~ 9 ~~

among the lilies
the skin of an animal
taken by surprise

~~ 10 ~~

the secret places—
how alluring their splendor
to famished spirits

~~ 11 ~~

the banqueting house
where secular debates rage
over cups of wine

~~ 12 ~~

lily among thorns—
to all who gaze upon it,
enchanting its ways
