in southern Arizona
sunflowers still bloom.

Snowflakes

Palm fronds seem to pierce the winter clouds at Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, Yuma, Arizona.

Deepening winter—
I look in vain for snowflakes
on the palm tree’s fronds.

Crossing the footbridge,
I find a desert garden,
but no gardener.

Sunflower Blossoms

IMG_8328
Sunflowers bloom at Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, Yuma, Arizona

Sunflower blossoms remind me of you
And how you would smile while tying your shoe
To ready yourself for journeys afar;
I keep these memories stored in a jar

Along with a pebble and a small bone,
And feathers I found while walking alone
That summer day at the edge of the lake,
Knowing your journey had been a mistake;

For somewhere afar, you vanished from sight,
Your footprints erased by wind in the night;
No one could find you, though they looked for days—
You’d gone just like sunlight burns away haze.

Many years later, the riddle goes on:
How did you vanish like darkness at dawn?
I have no answer, but this much is true:
Sunflower blossoms remind me of you.

Blue Monday: Stump

IMG_8361
Sign painted on a tree stump, Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, Yuma, Arizona

Whenever a stump’s painted blue,
And whether it’s old or it’s new,
It’s worth a hard look
(At least in my book)
Because of its heavenly hue!
