Respect

DSC_0204 (3)

Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, Yuma, Arizona

I have respect (the gardener says)
For beans and flowers and trees.
In wonder I kneel before living things—
I’ve nearly worn out my knees.

Even for weeds I have great respect.
(A weed’s a plant out of place).
You have to admire their tenacity—
They’re older than all our race.

But most of all, it’s stones I esteem;
They’re stalwart and brave and true,
Imparting their wisdom to those who care—
I’m one of those people, are you?

Blue Monday: Garden Goddess

DSC_0199
Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, Yuma, Arizona

Although her arms are broken
And her feet are crumbling fast,
The little garden goddess
Seems to last and last.

In every growing season,
Whether summer or in spring,
The little garden goddess
Doesn’t miss a thing.

She sees the roses blooming
And a hungry little bird;
She sees tomato hornworms,
Though her eyes are blurred.

She keeps watch every morning,
Every midday, every night—
The little garden goddess
Makes sure all’s just right.

first, we walk through the shadows,
then into the light.

An Everyday Place

DSC_0214 (2)

There’s magic about an everyday place,
There’s magic afoot—it’s true!
Just open your eyes and take a good look
At things that you thought you knew.

The sky, for instance, see how it’s glowing
Brilliantly, bitingly, blue?
The sidewalk you’ve traveled day after day—
That leaf at your feet, it’s new!

And isn’t that stone, the one to the right,
Flushing a different hue
Now that you pause for a much closer look?
O happy magic to you!

No smoking

DSC_0241
A warning to smokers at the Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, Yuma, Arizona

No smoking in the garden—
You’ll kill the tender plants!
No smoking in the garden—
You’ll chase away the ants!

Tobacco smoke is deadly
To people, beasts, and plants,
So, put away your ciggies,
And do the smoke-free dance!

Marigolds

DSC_0208 (1)

We biked into the garden,
Where marigolds did bloom.
We thought we’d have a picnic
In this fine outdoor room.

We spread a checkered blanket,
Near where we laid our bikes;
We nibbled cheese, sipped some wine,
And listened to the shrikes.

Insect

IMG_4474
A stone painted to resemble an insect, Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, Yuma, Arizona

A desert stone was posing,
Posing as a bug;
A hungry raven spied it,
Thought it was a slug.

The raven swooped down on it,
Hoping for a snack,
But when it saw the bug was stone,
It gave up the attack.
