Oceans of sand

Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, Southern California
Oceans and oceans of sand
As far as the eye can see!
Oceans and oceans of sand
From here to eternity!
Can you see the waves billow,
And can you hear the waves roar?
Oceans and oceans of sand,
Far from the watery shore!

Sand

Puerto Nuevo, a fishing village south of Tijuana in Baja California Norte, México
Little grains of beach sand
Scattered on the street;
Little grains of beach sand—
Watch your tender feet!
There among the cobbles
Lie the prickly grains,
Guaranteed to give you
Aches and bitter pains!

Space

A field of debris, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
winter afternoon—
the space in a broken jar
filling up with sand

Change

A rusting tractor, Yuma Conservation Garden, Yuma, Arizona
a change in fortune—
tractor that once plowed the earth
now rusts in the sand

Bits

Fragment of a broken pot, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
scattered in the sand
bits of broken pottery
that no one can mend

Hidden

Autumn afternoon, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
ten thousand tulips
hidden somewhere in the sand
along with their scent
~~~ ~~~ ~~~
autumn afternoon
darting into the shadows
a terrified mouse
Waves
Shadows of a yucca plant, White Sands National Monument, Alamogordo, New Mexico
A summer pilgrim
slogging through waves of white sand—
how aloof she seems!
~~ ~~ ~~
temporary waves
surging through the summer sand
only to subside
~~ ~~ ~~
waves of summer sand
erasing the pilgrim’s path
one whole day and night
Ending
Long shadows at day’s end, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
As shadows lengthen,
ants snuggle down for the night,
their mother the sand.
~~ ~~ ~~
Shadows lengthen as the day ends.
