Grin

Autumn decoration on a grave, Wellton Memorial Cemetery, Wellton, Arizona
With a crooked grin
a scarecrow honors blackbirds
and their many wiles.

Face

Autumn decoration on a grave, Wellton Memorial Cemetery, Wellton, Arizona
Before the new moon
the cemetery scarecrow
puts on a bright face.

Scarecrow

Gnarled ironwood tree, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona
Adjei Agyei-Baah’s haiku about a scarecrow inspires me to write a new haiku about a different kind of scarecrow:
full moon─
a scarecrow watches
its own shadow
~~ ~~ ~~
desert scarecrow tree
flapping at clouds and shadows—
next time the full moon

Birds

August sunset, Southern Arizona
a tattered scarecrow
puts on a new suit of clothes—
palm fronds at sunset
~~ ~~ ~~
enigmatic words
splashed blood-red against the sky—
ravens know the tongue
~~ ~~ ~~
a palm at sunset—
how the sparrows irritate
every thirsty frond
~~ ~~ ~~
gruesome little tales
wagged by pigeon tongues at dusk—
foxes slink away

Graces

Bugambilia (bougainvillea), Los Algodones, Baja California Norte, México
If you have no star,
then wish upon a petal—
scarecrows understand,
for underneath their straw hats
they grow the seasons’ graces.

Strawhead’s Eyes

Scarecrow in the organic garden, National Botanic Gardens, Dublin, Ireland
wind jostles the scarecrow
near the heavy-hung cornstalks
the summer is spent*
three crows that followed Jesus
have pecked out old strawhead’s eyes
