Each breath-of-a-poem begins with a phrase purloined from A Year in the World: Journeys of a Passionate Traveller by Frances Mayes.

~~ 1 ~~

on a yellow plate
a stack of toast tall enough
to touch the full moon

~~ 2 ~~

Against a stone wall
the notes from a temple bell
cling like morning mist.

~~ 3 ~~

adorned with flowers—
some scarlet, some lavender—
his daughter’s casket

~~ 4 ~~

a tall limestone cross—
seven dead chrysanthemums
scattered at its base

~~ 5 ~~

a few splats of rain
and her daydream is ruined—
midsummer morning

~~ 6 ~~

searching for a house
where three children play jump-rope
till the supper call

~~ 7 ~~

Under an awning
the desperate lovers touch
and kiss each other.

~~ 8 ~~

plotting the places
where she might run from his threats—
not enough to count

~~ 9 ~~

The man who sells forks
hides them from a group on tour—
his suspicious eyes.

Strange Little Songs

~~ 1 ~~

With plastic roses,
some of them scarlet, some white,
we freshen the graves.

~~ 2 ~~

a spicy salad—
picking at it in silence
with white plastic forks

~~ 3 ~~

a discarded tire
verses carved in the sidewall
honoring road trips

~~ 4 ~~

Discarded boxes—
seven refugees pretend
they have found new homes.

~~ 5 ~~

blind man’s violin
flying as though Marc Chagall
had lifted his brush

~~ 6 ~~

no one knows their names—
illegible inscriptions
on toppled tombstones

~~ 7 ~~

God wears out his shoes
and takes them to the temple
for some quick repairs.

~~ 8 ~~

demanding a song
from the bird that cannot sing—
demented woman

~~ 9 ~~

holding hot cocoa
in my left hand while scribbling
haiku with my right

~~ 10 ~~

two children use them
to play a game of marbles—
olives from the bowl

~~ 11 ~~

the stench of decay
rising from New Orleans streets
after Katrina

~~ 12 ~~

an old apple tree
bearing rusty jackknife scars—
Kevin loves Suzanne

will soon fade to brown

Oddities

This week’s Sunday Whirl words: scarlet, first, struck, pair, expect, sky, save, caress, bit, spare, might, behind

~~ 1 ~~

scarlet rebozo
draped around her thin shoulders
keeping in the chill

~~ 2 ~~

first prune the plum tree
the grapes will wait till Wednesday—
the cellist knows why

~~ 3 ~~

struck by lightning bolts
the mausoleum in ruins
plumes of marble dust

~~ 4 ~~

pair of dead man’s shoes
stuffed with twenty-dollar bills
cradling baby mice

~~ 5 ~~

expect the raven
to guide you to your true home
hapless wanderer

~~ 6 ~~

sky rolls and tumbles
the fist of a thunderstorm
punching the prairie

~~ 7 ~~

save another’s dreams
stuffing them in your pocket
with lint and spare change

~~ 8 ~~

caress the old cat
until she purrs with pleasure
one more smoky night

~~ 9 ~~

bit, bridle and rein—
after an early breakfast
the journey begins

~~ 10 ~~

might stories unfold
from unexpected sources
Scheherazade knows

~~ 11 ~~

spare bedroom
hosting guests tonight
three beggars

~~ 12 ~~

behind the old doors
the gentle susurrations
of travelers’ dreams
