Shady Place

DSC_0033 (1)
Afternoon shadows settle in a drainage ditch in Yuma, Arizona.

In a shady place
I stop to rest and listen—
a mourning dove sings.

Stone

 photo DSC_0002205_zpsudrxjknd.jpg
Someone left a stone at Roxaboxen Park, Yuma, Arizona. (Read why people leave stones at Roxaboxen.)

Left for passersby to see,
This wee stone delighted me.
When I saw its shade of blue,
I thought right away of you
And the way the summer skies
Show themselves in your bright eyes.

Tangled

Distant mountains, glimpsed through a palo verde tree, Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona

tangled in the shade
of a gnarly desert tree—
trembling little dove

Signs and Wonders

 photo 506962f8-5b75-444d-9600-5f26d5607f4c_zpsxn7re1qz.jpg

~~ 1 ~~

an old leather purse
abandoned by the roadside
now the mouse’s home

~~ 2 ~~

a pot of black ink
to welcome the empty pen
for one more comma

~~ 3 ~~

the clip in her hair
holding every strand in place—
blast of April wind

~~ 4 ~~

spreading coffee stain
turning a white tablecloth
the color of dust

~~ 5 ~~

lying in the shade
of a spreading live oak tree
the naked lovers

~~ 6 ~~

on the old whore’s mouth
iridescent pink lipstick—
her seductive moue

~~ 7 ~~

turbulent weather
brewing in the house next door
their angry voices

~~ 8 ~~

dissonant voices—
gleaners in the barley field
squabbling over grain

~~ 9 ~~

on the blue velour
a dozen signs and wonders
none of them explained

~~ 10 ~~

diaphanous veil
shrouding an empty doorway—
the flyspecked fabric

~~ 11 ~~

Why every grass blade
is mottled with rusty specks
the grasshoppers know.

~~ 12 ~~

winter solitude—
closing the white lace curtains
to the raging storm

long and wearisome
the way to burning mountain
no willow for shade

zip! zap! no fly!
