Six for Sunday

Dried teasel, Yavapai County, Arizona

~~ 1 ~~

autumn afternoon—
in the park two young women
kissing each other

~~ 2 ~~

watching the old dog
try to lift his left hind leg
to spray the fire plug

~~ 3 ~~

unexpected breeze
throws my paper boat off course—
autumn afternoon

~~ 4 ~~

leaves in the tea bowl
sinking down to the bottom—
I heed the omen

~~ 5 ~~

impossible task—
keeping the stone on my back
while running 5k

~~ 6 ~~

my neighbor’s mongrel—
how perfectly she retrieves
the little red ball

Little Things

~~ 1 ~~

cracking one more tooth
on a piece of hard candy—
her bittersweet tale

~~ 2 ~~

breaking the last plate
in her mother’s collection
to vent her anger

~~ 3 ~~

selecting a brush
one with a broken handle
for her self-portrait

~~ 4 ~~

weight of her secret
driving her down to her knees
in utter despair

~~ 5 ~~

elegant mirror
studded with pearls and rubies—
spider web of cracks

~~ 6 ~~

at the kitchen sink
humming little hymns of praise
for each daily chore

~~ 7 ~~

(Still thinking about how to ravish you!)

~~ 8 ~~

orange marmalade—
licking the last sticky bit
from the silver knife

~~ 9 ~~

the sigh of the spoon
stirring the seventeenth batch
of pancake batter

~~ 10 ~~

stop-and-go traffic
wearing out my Chevy’s brakes
one foot at a time

~~ 11 ~~

fresh load of cement
churning on the truck chugging
toward the building site

~~ 12 ~~

after the frog jumps
another page of haiku
in Basho’s manner

Fishing Tales

 photo 157_zps56d52a1a.jpg

~~ 1 ~~
seven fishing boats
rocking imperceptibly
in a gentle swell

~~ 2 ~~

fishing line tangles
twice around the willow limb—
Elijah returns

~~ 3 ~~

fishing through the mess
in the middle desk drawer—
pages torn from Psalms

~~ 4 ~~

fishing from the bridge
with a stolen rod and reel—
Egypt lies downstream

~~ 5 ~~

how her heart aches
fishing for compliments
that never come

~~ 6 ~~

deep-water fishing—
nothing God says in mercy
keeps Jonah on land

~~ 7 ~~

sharp prongs of lightning—
a fleet of fishing trawlers
limping back to shore

~~ 8 ~~

fishing boots with holes—
watching prophets weave and sway
limping round puddles

~~ 9 ~~

guts bloody the sink
from this morning’s fishing trip
to Lake Galilee
